The glass storefront at 1100 N. Walker Ave. has been restored. Behind it, the flour is milled on site, the bread and cheese are made in-house, and sandwiches come on house-made schiacciata. This is Mezzo Bakeshop, and it opened in September in the building that housed Brown's Bakery for decades.
For anyone living south of St. Anthony, the address matters as much as the menu. The fall season in this part of Midtown happens on a few blocks. The Midtown Walkabout's vendor market sets up on Walker Avenue. Santa Paws is at the dog park on NW 10th. The Saints Santa Run starts at the hospital on NW 9th that gave SoSA its name. After three years with the lights off, the corner that anchored those blocks for generations is open again.
A Bakery That Once Moved Over a Weekend
Brown's Bakery started in 1946 at 13th Street and N. Robinson Avenue under Bill and Anna Faye Brown. Later, the family leased the Walker Avenue building, which used to be a grocery store, and got it ready to open while still working shifts at the original bakery. The move happened fast. Brenda Martindale described it to The Journal Record:
"They closed over there on a Saturday and opened back up here that Monday morning. They never missed a beat."
In that same story, the family credited 77 years of customer relationships to cinnamon rolls, sausage rolls, applesauce doughnuts and wedding cakes. Some of the people who ordered those wedding cakes were in their 70s and 80s by then. KFOR reported that the Walker Avenue location would close its doors at noon on July 8, 2023. The Journal Record reported at the time that the 5,654-square-foot building was to be sold to an investment company.
The original bakery moved here in one weekend. Getting a bakery running in the building again took about three years.
What the Second Opening Took
Tori and Chad Arnold own several Summer Moon Coffee locations in Oklahoma, The Oklahoman reported on Sept. 14. According to the Oklahoma Gazette, the idea started with a practical problem. The Arnolds needed to supply pastries to eight metro Summer Moon stores. Once they were doing that baking anyway, they decided to bring it out front. A family trip to Italy then turned a supply kitchen into an Italian-inspired café built around espresso, sandwiches and pastries.
Tori Arnold told the Gazette she had decided against another location when she drove past the empty Brown's building and called her husband to say, "I think we're supposed to go to Brown's."
The work happened in two phases. In September 2025, The Oklahoman reported that the landlord's renovation included restoring the all-glass storefront. The Arnolds got the keys in January 2026 and spent the next eight months finishing the interior before opening in September. When the Brown family took over the same space decades earlier, a family member said the remodel took six months. In both cases, the building needed months of work before it could bake anything.
What Comes Out of the Kitchen Now
The Gazette's review describes a menu that gives equal weight to espresso, cocktails and zero-proof drinks. The critic started with a spritz, then had the Scelta Madre sandwich: prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil cream on house-made schiacciata. The visit ended with a pignoli cookie. The same review reported that Mezzo makes its breads and cheeses in-house and mills its own flour, and it compared the café to Scissortail Park for raising the local standard.
Mezzo is a daytime café, and its posted schedule reflects that:
- Tuesday through Friday: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Saturday: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sunday: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Monday: closed
The 6 a.m. weekday opening makes it a stop before work as well as a weekend destination. Check Mezzo's site before a Monday walk, since it's closed that day.
Oct. 24 Puts a Market on the Same Street
The first fall date that brings people past the bakery is the Midtown Walkabout on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Midtown Association and Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership host free family activities across the district, and the Vendor Market of local businesses and makers returns to Walker Avenue. Mezzo is open Saturdays until 3 p.m., so the bakery and the market overlap for most of the afternoon.
Several Midtown businesses have posted specials for the day:
- Bar None: North American wines and white bread sandwiches
- Barkeep Supply: fall cocktails plus drink and snack specials
- Barrios Fine Mexican Dishes: La Luna Sangre to drink and Tacos El Gobernador to eat
- Dust Bowl Lanes & Lounge: happy hour pricing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Plant: a street cart with fall drinks and snacks
- Plant People Shop: a potting station with select plants and terracotta pots for $10
- Commonplace Books: 10% off mini candles while supplies last
- Midtown Drug: 15% off all over-the-counter items
- City + Stars: a sidewalk sale and a free DIY bag charm station with a $25 purchase
- Wishbone Vintage: 10% off everything, plus a $10 rack and a $5 bin
Commonplace Books also has a calendar beyond the Walkabout. The Journal Record reported in September that the store hosts quarterly ticketed Commonplace Conversations, most recently a panel of small-business owners.
November Moves One Block Over, to NW 10th
Midtown Mutts Dog Park is at 301 NW 10th St. On Sunday, Nov. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m., it hosts Merry Midtown's Santa Paws. Professional Santa photos are free, there are DIY photo spots, and the professional shots are emailed to anyone who signs up with an email address. The event is two hours long, so plan to arrive early in the window.
December Starts at the Hospital SoSA Is Named For
On Saturday, Dec. 5, the Saints Santa Run starts at SSM Health St. Anthony, 535 NW 9th St. The schedule:
- 8:45 a.m.: day-of registration and packet pickup open
- 9:45 a.m.: Kids' Dash
- 10 a.m.: 1-mile Fun Run/Walk
- 10:30 a.m.: 5K Run/Walk
Entry is currently $30 for the 1-mile and $45 for the 5K. The posted prices rise to $35 and $50 closer to race day, but the two official pages give different cutoff dates. The Downtown in December schedule shows the higher prices starting Nov. 30, while RunSignup says prices go up after 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 27. Registering before Nov. 27 gets the lower price under either schedule.
The 2026 route hasn't been posted. In past years, the course started and finished in the hospital's east parking lot and ran through Midtown and Heritage Hills. Visit OKC reported that all 2025 proceeds went to the Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership. The 2026 page doesn't name a beneficiary yet.
The Rest of the Season, by Date
Beyond the few blocks around Walker, the downtown holiday calendar is already set:
- Nov. 12: Oklahoma City Tree Lighting Festival, 2 S. Mickey Mantle Drive
- Nov. 13 through Jan. 31, 2027: Devon Ice Rink at Myriad Botanical Gardens
- Nov. 24 through Dec. 30: Miracle at Social Capital, 517 S. Hudson Ave.
- Dec. 5 and Dec. 12: Lights On Broadway in Automobile Alley
- Dec. 11 through 21: OKC Ballet's The Nutcracker at Civic Center Music Hall
The Downtown in December lineup also lists free OKC Streetcar rides every day of the season. Dec. 5 has both the Santa Run in the morning and the first Lights On Broadway, so a SoSA resident can start the day at St. Anthony and finish it in Automobile Alley.
At West Real Estate Company, we follow what opens and closes on the blocks around SoSA, from a restored storefront on Walker to the start line on NW 9th. If you'd like to know how the reopening of a corner like this one shows up in what your home is worth, Request Your Home Valuation and we'll go through the numbers with you.
